Check-in & web check-in

The most frequently asked questions

How does web check-in work?
  1. Enter your six-digit booking number or your etix® ticket number on the "Web check-in" page, and then enter your surname or the surname of one of the passengers on your booking.
  2. You can now check in all passengers in your booking at the same time, including infants.
  3. You can now also reserve a seat.
  4. To finish, simply print out your boarding pass.

You can use the web check-in function at the earliest 72 hours and at the latest 3 hours before departure, and at German departure airports up to 30 minutes before departure (exception: Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom). At London Heathrow, due to the size of this international airport, web check-in is only available up to 45 minutes prior to departure.

Luggage

As you already have a boarding pass, if you are only travelling with hand luggage you may go straight to the gate. If you have special luggage, excess baggage or luggage you wish to check in, please use the check-in counter. At the airports Berlin, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Munich and Stuttgart you can also use the baggage drop-off counter that we have set up exclusively for checking in luggage.

Other additional services

As soon as the web check-in process is complete, it is no longer possible to book other additional services online. However, you will be able to register additional luggage to be checked in for an extra charge at the airport counter.

 Note:
Please note that it is only possible to check in for Germanwings/Eurowings flights at germanwings.com. For flights operated by our partner airlines, please use the online check-in function for the relevant airline. The online check-in terms of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

How does check-in work?

There are various options available for checking in:

1. Check-in counter at the airport

A selection list of all our destination airports and corresponding information on check-in counters there can be found on the page "Airports and Terminals".

2. Self-service check-in

Passengers can use our convenient self-service check-in option at Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Nuremberg, London Heathrow, Stuttgart and Vienna airports.

Here too, your hand luggage must not weigh more than 8 kg or exceed the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

If you would like to take larger or heavier luggage with you, you can use our baggage drop-off counter. This is much faster than the check-in counter, as this counter is only available to those dropping off luggage.

3. Web check-in

On the "web check-in" page you can check in comfortably from your office or from home. This option has the clear advantage of saving time and stress, as you can check all travellers in at the same time. All you need is your six-digit booking code or your etix® ticket number and a printer.

Go to web check-in

4. Mobile check-in

The Germanwings mobile services allow you to check in whilst on the move using just your mobile phone with an internet connection. You can check in via your browser or, even more conveniently, via the Germanwings app for iPhone, Android and Windows. This method simply requires your six-digit booking code and the surname under which the booking was made. During the check-in process you can choose whether to receive your boarding pass via SMS or email, or whether you would prefer to save your boarding pass in Passbook or in the Germanwings app.

Are there restrictions on the number and weight of items of luggage?

Each passenger may check in up to 5 items of luggage, each of which may not weigh more than 32 kg.

 Note:

If you do not have a booking number but instead have an etix® ticket number, or if you have booked a Germanwings/Eurowings flight with one of our partner airlines or in a travel agency, luggage regulations may vary. Please contact the relevant airline or your travel agency. For flights operated by our partner airlines, the luggage regulations of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

When can I check in?

Our counters generally open 2 hours before departure and close 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. In order to ensure a prompt departure, a later check-in time is unfortunately no longer possible. The right to carriage is forfeited in the event of a late arrival.

Varying counter opening and closing times:

Airport

Counter opening times

Counter closing times

Algiers 3 hours 30 minutes before departure 1 hour 30 minutes before scheduled departure time
Casablanca 2 hours 30 minutes before departure 50 minutes before scheduled departure time
Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden 1 hour 30 minutes before departure 30 minutes before scheduled departure time
London Heathrow 2 hours before departure 45 minutes before scheduled departure time
Tel Aviv 3 hours before departure 1 hour before scheduled departure time
Tunis 3 hours before departure 1 hour before scheduled departure time
Priština 2 hours before departure 40 minutes before scheduled departure time

Our recommendation:
Arrive at the counter at least 1 hour 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time to ensure a stress-free flight to your holiday destination or a relaxed start to your business trip.

We ask for your understanding that we are unable to allow check-in the evening before departure.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the check-in regulations of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

Can I use my Germanwings/Eurowings boarding pass to enter the Lufthansa Senator or Business Lounge?

Passengers who book our BEST fare are entitled to lounge access at selected airports.

HON Circle members and Senators are entitled to lounge access on Germanwings/Eurowings flights, regardless of the fare. This includes all Lufthansa lounges and partner lounges in Germany and Europe as well as the lounges at the Germanwings/Eurowings BEST departure points.

If you have Frequent Traveller status and you book a SMART fare, you are entitled to use all Lufthansa lounges and Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and SWISS lounges in Germany and Europe.

How can I check in with my mobile phone?

You can check in with your mobile phone at the earliest 72 hours and at the latest 3 hours before departure. You can check in with your mobile phone for domestic flights at all German departure airports and at many other European departure airports even up to 30 minutes before departure.

How it works:

  1. Use the mobile services homepage, the "Check-in" item or the "Manage flights" area in the main menu to check in with your mobile phone.
  2. You will need your six-digit booking number and the surname under which the booking was made.
  3. During the check-in process you can choose whether to receive your boarding pass by SMS or email, or whether you would prefer to save your boarding pass in Passbook or in the Germanwings app for iPhone, Android or Windows.

If you have a Germanwings account and are registered to use our mobile services, under "Check-in" you will find an overview of flights for which you are now able to check in. If you are a registered customer, we will also remind you on your personalised homepage 72 hours before departure that your flight is now ready for check-in.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the check-in terms of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

What do I need for check-in?

You just need your booking number or your etix® ticket number and a valid ID.

Please make sure to find out well in advance of your flight about any visas or other entry documents you may require. The relevant consulate will be able to advise you on this matter.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the check-in regulations of the relevant airline apply.

Can I select a seat during check-in?

Yes, seats can be selected for all Germanwings/Eurowings flights. If you check in at one of our counters, you will be assigned a seat, but if you choose web check-in, mobile check-in or self-service check-in, you will be able to reserve a seat at no extra cost.1

 Note:

For flights operated by one of our partner airlines, the terms of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

1 Does not apply to seats with more legroom.

Will I receive a ticket when I book a flight?

No. Depending on the type of booking, you will receive a booking confirmation number or etix® ticket number instead of a ticket from us. When you present this at the counter or enter this number during web or mobile check-in or at the self-service check-in kiosk, you will receive your boarding pass.

 Important:
When you book flights with our partner airlines, you will receive booking confirmations by email only. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

Can I check my luggage in the evening before my flight?

No, we do not offer this service.

Click here for information on how to check in at our airport counters.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the check-in terms of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

What is an etix® ticket number?

etix® electronic tickets replace paper tickets and consist of a 13-digit number in addition to the booking code. A booking code is issued with every etix® ticket number.
For example, if you book your flight on lufthansa.com or through a travel agent, you will receive an etix® ticket number that is also saved in the etix® database. When you present your number and a photo ID at the airport counter, you will receive your boarding pass.

Why do I need to enter my personal information and travel document information to use the web and mobile check-in features?

For security reasons, airlines are obliged to report to foreign authorities the personal information of all passengers using the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS). This regulation generally covers the reporting of information on your identity and travel documents (passport, national ID card).

Passengers who book online can enter this information immediately after completing their booking. Any missing information can be added later by going to 'My Germanwings'.

etix® is an electronic ticket that replaces paper tickets. It has a 13-digit number in addition to your booking code. You receive this etix® ticket number under certain circumstances, for example if you book through the Lufthansa website or a travel agent. It is saved for you in the etix® database. When you present your etix® ticket number and a photo ID, you will receive your boarding pass.

When flying from, to or over certain countries (such as flights from United Kingdom), airlines are required by law to collect certain data through the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) and to forward it to the authorities of those countries prior to the flight.

The following information is required:

  • Title
  • First name and surname
  • Date and country of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Passport information

Passengers who book online can enter this information immediately after completing their booking. Any missing information can be added later by going to 'My Germanwings'.

To avoid unnecessary delays at the check-in counter, we recommend that you submit the APIS information as early as possible using our online form.

Please note that you may not be permitted to travel if the information is not complete.
