Animals

The most frequently asked questions

What conditions apply for the carriage of animals?

Germanwings only carries dogs and cats. These must be carried in the cabin.

The following requirements must be fulfilled for your animal to be able to fly with you:

  • Animals must be carried in a watertight, closed, breathable bag (not a hard container) that they cannot bite through.
  • The bag may be no bigger than 40 x 40 x 25.5 cm.
  • Both the animal and the bag together may weigh no more than 8 kg.
  • The animal must be able to stand upright in the bag.
  • The animal must be able to turn around and lie in a natural position.
  • Only one animal is allowed per bag and per person.

Please note that we will not be able to carry your animal if the bag does not fulfil the above requirements.

The provisions of the EU regulation on animal health requirements applicable to the non-commercial movement of pet animals, which came into force on 1 October 2004, must also be observed. Please read this regulation before booking your flight or contact your vet, the Veterinary Office or border control.

Download the fact sheet on the new regulation as a PDF.

You can read the EU regulation online here.

Category 1 attack dogs

For safety reasons, we cannot carry category 1 attack dogs such as pit bull terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers.

Flights to the UK and Ireland

Due to the local entry requirements, we are unfortunately unable to carry animals on flights from or to the UK and Ireland.

Please note that the entry and exit of guide dogs are subject to special regulations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Flights to Israel

The following conditions apply for bringing dogs and cats into Israel:

  • An official veterinary health certificate including all required vaccinations (not older than 10 days) must be carried.
  • Animals must be at least three months old.

The following conditions apply for bringing or returning dogs and cats to Israel:

  • Animals must be identified with a microchip (ISO standard 11784 or 11785).
  • An official veterinary health certificate must be issued by the district vet no earlier than 10 days before the flight.
  • A vaccination certificate must be carried and must include a valid rabies vaccination given at least 30 days but no more than 12 months before the flight.
  • Evidence of rabies antibodies must be given.
  • A blood test must be carried out at the Veterinary Institute Beit Dagan at least 30 days after vaccination and at least three months before entering Europe.

How do I register my animal and how much will it cost?

You can register your dog or cat in the second step of the booking process under "More services". If you have already completed your booking, you can also register your dog or cat under "My flight". Our call centre is also available to handle your reservation.

Click here for more information about booking additional services at a later date.

This table gives you more information about charges for transporting pets.

 Note:
If your booking has an etix® ticket number or you booked your Germanwings flight through one of our partner airlines or a travel agent, charges may vary. Please contact the appropriate airline or your travel agent for more information about this. The flights of our partner airlines are subject to the regulations of the relevant airline.

Can I add services to my booking later?

Yes, you can edit your booking and add the following extra services up to 30 minutes before departure, whether you do it online, on your mobile phone, by phone or at one of our airport counters:

  • Regular, excess and special luggage (golfing equipment, bicycles and sports equipment such as surfboards, snowboards, bodyboards, diving gear, and sail and hang gliders)
  • Transport of pets
  • Seat reservations
  • Boarding and disembarking assistance for hearing or visually impaired passengers and travellers with restricted mobility
  • Boarding with a wheelchair
  • Assistance for passengers with restricted mobility from check-in to the aircraft, including assistance with steps to aircraft
  • Train connections to airport

Please be aware that space restrictions prevent us from transporting unlimited amounts of special baggage. Once our space is used up, you will no longer be able to select this service.

Fare upgrade

Up to 72 hours before departure, you can still upgrade your fare by telephone or at our counters. There will be no processing charge if you do this by phone.

Note: Do you have an etix® ticket number instead of a booking number? Did you book your Germanwings flight through a travel agent or one of our partner airlines? Did you book a flight with a partner airline at germanwings.com? If so, please contact the relevant airline or your travel agent.

Can visually impaired passengers bring their guide dogs on board?

Of course, guide dogs may fly with us free of charge. Please understand, however, that we are only able to carry one guide dog per flight. We therefore recommend that you check before booking that this guide dog place is still available, and then register your dog with us using our contact form.

Please note that the entry and exit of guide dogs are subject to special regulations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For more information please go to: https://www.gov.uk/pet-travel-travelling-with-assistance-dogs or write to:

etix® is an electronic ticket that replaces paper tickets. It has a 13-digit number in addition to your booking code. You receive this etix® ticket number under certain circumstances, for example if you book through the Lufthansa website or a travel agent. It is saved for you in the etix® database. When you present your etix® ticket number and a photo ID, you will receive your boarding pass.
