What payment options are available?

Any charges incurred by cancelled payments or insufficient funds will be added to the flight price. In the event of a chargeback, please do not make any payments. We will contact you as soon as possible to discuss the next steps.

 Note:
Direct debit arrangements may vary for flights booked with our partner airlines at germanwings.com

You can also pay with your credit card as long as you are entitled to use it to pay over the phone or online. For more information on this, please contact your bank.

We accept the following credit cards:

  • MasterCard

PayPal

You can either authorise PayPal to transfer the payment amount to us, or you can authorise us to withdraw the relevant amount from your PayPal account.

 Note:
transaction fee applies for all bookings made via PayPal. If additional services are booked at a later date of if you purchase a voucher via PayPal, this fee will be reduced.

Paying on invoice (RatePAY)

You can also pay for your flight and any charged additional services via RatePAY invoice if:

  • You book online and the amount payable is at least €20 but no more than €2,000
  • The flight price is given in euros
  • Your billing and contact address is your personal address and is within the Federal Republic of Germany or Austria
  • You have a positive credit check

Detailed information can be found in the RatePAY data protection declaration.

Cash payments

You may only pay in cash if you book your ticket at one of our airport counters.

Paying for a booking with a voucher is quick and simple:

  2. Enter your voucher code and then check the code entered and the travel services in your basket.
  3. Click on "Confirm booking" to complete your booking.

If the price of the flight exceeds the value of your voucher, you may pay the remaining amount either with another voucher or another payment method.

Validity
Vouchers may only be used to book Germanwings/Eurowings flight services and not partner offers (e.g. Rail&Fly, rental cars or hotels).

Please note that conditions of use vary for purchased and promotional vouchers.

 Note:
Vouchers may not be used to book flights with our partner airlines at germanwings.com. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

Are there any restrictions on the amount, size and weight of hand luggage?

Each passenger may carry one item of hand luggage on board with a maximum weight of 8 kg and maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. This excludes foldable garment bags carried as hand luggage, which may measure up to 57 x 54 x 15 cm.

Due to the limited space available in the cabin, larger or heavier pieces of luggage must be checked in at the airport counter and will be carried in the hold. This is not only for your own safety and the safety of your fellow passengers, but also for your comfort.

Please ensure that medication and valuable items such as laptops, mobile phones, PDAs, documents, ID and jewellery are removed from any bag which is to be carried in the hold.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the hand luggage regulations of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

What options are available to me if I am unable to take my flight?

If you are unable to take your flight, you have three options:

1. Change your booking to another date

Flight bookings can be changed to another available date up to 30 minutes before departure, provided that the flight will be taken by the same person on the same route and is on our published flight schedule. You can change your booking online, via our mobile services or by phoning our call centre. If you have added the Flex option to your SMART or BEST fare booking, you can change your flight free of charge up to 30 minutes before departure. For other bookings, a fixed charge per passenger and per journey leg will be applied. The applicable amount can be found in our table of charges (Article 17 "BKG" and "NC1"). The flight price is determined by the fare that applies to the route at the time you change the booking. If the new flight is more expensive, you must pay the difference in price as well as the booking change fee. However, refunds will not be given if the new flight that is lower in price.

Changing your booking online

  1. Log in to "My flight" using your username and password.
  2. In the overview of your booked flights, select the flight you wish to change.
  3. Enter the new flight date.

Changes to flights made online must be made within the same fare. If you wish to change your fare, you can do so up to 72 hours before departure by telephone or at the airport counter.

Charges
Booking changes will incur a fixed charge and, if appropriate, the fare difference. We will also charge an administration fee for changes made via telephone or in person. This does not apply to flights booked with the Flex option.

 Note:
If you have an etix® ticket number rather than a booking number, or if you have booked a flight operated by one of our partner airlines at germanwings.com or in a travel agency, please contact the relevant airline or your travel agency regarding this matter. These bookings may be subject to different conditions for making booking changes. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

2. Name change

You can transfer your flight to another person by telephone on payment of a charge, but only up to 30 minutes before departure (or in the case of bookings of multiple journey legs, up to 30 minutes before the first flight departs). Please have your booking number ready when you call.

Charges
If the current flight price is higher than the flight you originally booked, you will be required to pay the difference.

 Note:
If your booking has an etix® ticket number, it is not possible to change a name for a Germanwings/Eurowings flight.

3. Cancellation

If you have added the Flex option to your SMART or BEST fare booking, you may cancel your flight up to 30 minutes before departure free of charge. Unfortunately, other bookings cannot be cancelled on account of their low prices. However, the flight dates can be changed online in the "My flight" area. Alternatively, you can call us to have the flights transferred to another person; a charge will apply.

There are four ways to cancel a flight booked with the SMART or BEST fare with the Flex option:

  • Here via our website
  • Via our mobile services under "Manage flights"
  • Via our call centre
  • At our airport counters.

With the Flex option, bookings may also be cancelled after the original travel date has passed. This option is free of charge, but flights must be cancelled on the same day as the original scheduled departure date by phone or in person at our airport counters. If a booking is changed or cancelled after the original departure date, a fixed charge will apply.

What regulations apply for carrying liquids in hand luggage?

In addition to all other hand luggage regulations, the following regulations regarding carrying liquids on aeroplanes apply for all departures within the EU and in several other countries, including Switzerland, Russia, Iceland, Croatia, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Norway:

  • All liquids (such as cosmetics and toiletries, gels, pastes, creams, lotions, mixtures of liquids and solids, perfumes, pressurised containers, cans or water bottles) and wax and gel-like products may only be carried on board in containers holding up to 100 ml or 100 g.
  • These liquids and products must be packed in a transparent, resealable and fully closed plastic bag (max. capacity 1 l). No such plastic bags are available at the Germanwings/Eurowings check-in area so travellers must ensure they obtain one in advance, for example a freezer bag from the supermarket.
  • Prescribed medication and baby food may also be carried in hand luggage if the traveller can prove that they will be required during the flight.

Our recommendation:
Store all liquids and gels that you will not require during your flight in your checked luggage to ensure a quicker boarding process.

Liquids from Travel Value or duty-free shops

All liquids, gels, drinks etc. purchased from Travel Value or duty-free shops after the security checks may of course be carried on board.

 Note:
Products and bags that do not comply with requirements or are not closed with a rubber band or similar must be handed over to security. Germanwings/Eurowings accepts no liability for any belongings brought along by passengers which must be handed over to security.

How does check-in work?

There are various options available for checking in:

1. Check-in counter at the airport

A selection list of all our destination airports and corresponding information on check-in counters there can be found on the page "Airports and Terminals".

2. Self-service check-in

Passengers can use our convenient self-service check-in option at Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Nuremberg, London Heathrow, Stuttgart and Vienna airports.

Here too, your hand luggage must not weigh more than 8 kg or exceed the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

If you would like to take larger or heavier luggage with you, you can use our baggage drop-off counter. This is much faster than the check-in counter, as this counter is only available to those dropping off luggage.

3. Web check-in

On the "web check-in" page you can check in comfortably from your office or from home. This option has the clear advantage of saving time and stress, as you can check all travellers in at the same time. All you need is your six-digit booking code or your etix® ticket number and a printer.

Go to web check-in

4. Mobile check-in

The Germanwings mobile services allow you to check in whilst on the move using just your mobile phone with an internet connection. You can check in via your browser or, even more conveniently, via the Germanwings app for iPhone, Android and Windows. This method simply requires your six-digit booking code and the surname under which the booking was made. During the check-in process you can choose whether to receive your boarding pass via SMS or email, or whether you would prefer to save your boarding pass in Passbook or in the Germanwings app.

Find out more

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the check-in conditions of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

How does web check-in work?
  1. Enter your six-digit booking number or your etix® ticket number on the "Web check-in" page, and then enter your surname or the surname of one of the passengers on your booking.
  2. You can now check in all passengers in your booking at the same time, including infants.
  3. You can now also reserve a seat.
  4. To finish, simply print out your boarding pass.

You can use the web check-in function at the earliest 72 hours and at the latest 3 hours before departure, and at German departure airports up to 30 minutes before departure (exception: Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom). At London Heathrow, due to the size of this international airport, web check-in is only available up to 45 minutes prior to departure.

Luggage

As you already have a boarding pass, if you are only travelling with hand luggage you may go straight to the gate. If you have special luggage, excess baggage or luggage you wish to check in, please use the check-in counter. At the airports Berlin, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Munich and Stuttgart you can also use the baggage drop-off counter that we have set up exclusively for checking in luggage.

Other additional services

As soon as the web check-in process is complete, it is no longer possible to book other additional services online. However, you will be able to register additional luggage to be checked in for an extra charge at the airport counter.

 Note:
Please note that it is only possible to check in for Germanwings/Eurowings flights at germanwings.com. For flights operated by our partner airlines, please use the online check-in function for the relevant airline. The online check-in terms of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

Can I cancel my booking?

If you selected the Flex option when booking your SMART or BEST fare, you can cancel your flight up to 30 minutes prior to departure at no extra charge. There are four ways to do this:

  • Via our website under "My flight"
  • Via our mobile services under "Manage flights"
  • Via our call centre
  • At our airport counters

With the Flex option, flights can also be cancelled after the time of the original departure has passed, as long as this is done on the same calendar day as the departure of the original flight, either by telephone via the call centre or in person at the airport counter. If the flight is not cancelled until after the original departure date, a charge will be incurred.

If you have selected another fare, your booking cannot be cancelled due to the low-cost price of the flight.

What items may not be carried in hand luggage?

For security reasons, the following items are prohibited in the cabin:

  • Toy or dummy weapons (plastic or metal)
  • Petrol lighters
  • Nail files (paper files are allowed)
  • Catapults
  • Cutlery
  • Knives with blades of any length
  • Razor blades
  • Tools
  • Darts
  • Scissors
  • Syringes
  • Knitting needles
  • Sports rackets
  • Billiard, snooker or pool cues

For departures within the EU and from many other countries, there are special conditions regulating the carrying of liquids.

etix® is an electronic ticket that replaces paper tickets. It has a 13-digit number in addition to your booking code. You receive this etix® ticket number under certain circumstances, for example if you book through the Lufthansa website or a travel agent. It is saved for you in the etix® database. When you present your etix® ticket number and a photo ID, you will receive your boarding pass.
