Travelling with children

Travelling with children

Travelling somewhere as a family is one of life's best experiences. Germanwings/Eurowings lets you discover the world with your children conveniently and affordably by offering discounted prices. Here's how to get good value for your money on your next holiday with the kids:

  • Children aged 2 to 11 and infants under 2 years old1 travelling in their own seat with a child safety seat receive a 20% discount on the regular fare*.
  • Infants aged 2 and under1 who travel on a parent's lap are subject only to a service fee of €15 per leg on short and medium-haul flights, €75 on long-haul flights.

1 Please note that the age of the child when boarding the last flight booked applies.

Back to "Services"

Passenger safety comes first with Germanwings/Eurowings – and that applies particularly to children, of course. That's why you're allowed to board with your own child safety seat. Germanwings/Eurowings does not provide child safety seats of its own. To guarantee smooth processing, flights on which a child safety seat will be brought into the cabin can only be booked through the call centre or at a Germanwings/Eurowings airport counter.

Please note that check-in at a Germanwings/Eurowings airport counter is mandatory if a child safety seat is to be used, as only child safety seats bearing the TÜV seal "for use in aircraft" are permitted on the flight. The booster seat will be checked for suitability at the check-in counter, so it is not possible to use web check-in or self check-in.

If a seat does not comply with requirements, our employees are authorised to prevent its use and to stow the seat in a separate location. In such cases, infants will be secured with a loop belt on the adult's lap. We regret that it will not be possible to refund the price paid for the separate seat.

Prams, pushchairs and luggage

You may check one pram, pushchair, child safety seat or travel cot per child free of charge. Larger prams are transported separately as bulky luggage. Depending on the departure airport, smaller, lighter pushchairs can be taken all the way to the gate.

Travel documents and entry and exit regulations for children and adolescents

In order to take your flight, all travellers need your booking number. Moreover, they are required to show proof of identity – even children/adolescents and infants.

European directives require children to travel with their own travel documents.
Every child of German nationality who travels outside Germany needs his or her own travel document, regardless of age. Entries in a parent's passport are no longer accepted.
The directive also applies to travel within the EU and the Schengen Area.

Foreign nationals who live in Germany are subject to the regulations of their own country or the entry provisions of the countries that they wish to fly to.

Please note that in some countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Romania and Israel, separate entry and exit provisions apply to unaccompanied children and adolescents.1 You are expressly advised that every passenger bears individual responsibility for complying with the official entry and exit provisions. For this reason, we recommend obtaining information about the requirements from the responsible authorities and collecting the necessary documentation well before you travel.
On most routes, Germanwings/Eurowings can only transport children aged 12 and under if they travel with a responsible adult companion. On direct domestic flights and those from Germany to Zurich or Vienna only, Germanwings/Eurowings offers a service for unaccompanied minors ages 5 through 11.

In the event that the child's adult companion is not a parent or a guardian, we will need written consent from a parent and/or guardian. Click here to find the form for submitting this written consent, without which it will not be possible to transport the child.
The child and the companion must be reserved in the same booking (under the same booking number). If they are not, please contact our call centre no later than 3 days before departure so that a special note can be added to the companion's reservation.

1At this time, Germanwings/Eurowings does not offer unaccompanied minors service for children flying alone to these countries.

More information

You also receive discounts for children on Germanwings/Eurowings flights that you have booked through one of our partner airlines or your travel agent. For more information, please contact the relevant airline or your travel agent.

Flights provided by our partner airlines are subject to the fares of the airline in question.

Frequently asked questions relating to the topic: Travelling with children

Can my child travel alone?

Children aged 12 or older may fly alone. Children under 12 may only fly accompanied by a responsible adult. Children between the age of five and eleven may also travel accompanied by a sibling aged sixteen years or older. The child's companion must be able to assist the child at all times in the case of any unusual event. If the responsible adult does not have parental authority, we must be provided with the following written permission from an adult with parental authority.

Please note that special entry and exit conditions apply in some countries.

Unaccompanied minor service

On direct domestic flights and direct flights from Germany to Zurich or Vienna Germanwings/Eurowings offers an unaccompanied minor service (UM service) for children aged from five up to and including 11. Our friendly staff will not only ensure the well-being of your child during the flight, but will also make sure that your child arrives safely in the destination airport. In addition, we provide children travelling alone with a savoury snack and still water (0.2 l) and one other drink on board, free of charge.

Booking

The UM service and the corresponding flight can be booked via the call centre or at a Germanwings/Eurowings airport counter, but unfortunately not online or via mobile phone. If your booking has an etix® ticket number, you can only book the UM service at the airport.

Charges

A charge will be applied per journey leg and per child. This must be paid with the booking payment.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the conditions of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

What are the luggage regulations for infants and children?

For children under 12 years, the same luggage regulations apply as for adults. This applies even if children will not be sitting in their own seats.

One of the following items may be carried and checked in as luggage per infant/child free of charge:

  • A pram
  • A pushchair
  • A booster seat
  • A carrycot

Larger items will be carried as oversize luggage. At some airports smaller, lighter pushchairs can be taken with you to the gate.

Booster seats

If your child is to sit on a booster seat in the cabin, this must first be examined at the check-in counter to ensure it is suitable for the flight. For this reason, web check-in is not available for passengers bringing a booster seat.

More information on bringing booster seats into the cabin can be found here.

More information on luggage regulations for adults can be found here.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the luggage regulations of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

What documents does my child require for the flight?

In addition to the booking number or etix® ticket number, all travellers including infants, children and adolescents require ID.

As of 26 June 2012, every child with German nationality, regardless of age, requires their own travel document to travel abroad. Joint passports for parents and children are no longer recognised. The new regulation also applies for travel within the EU and the Schengen area.

Children under 12

As described here, children under 12 are normally required to travel with a responsible adult. If a child travels with an adult who does not have parental authority, written permission from the parent or an adult with parental authority is required. If such permission is not presented, the child will not be allowed to fly with us.

The required declaration form can be downloaded here.

Special regulations also apply for booking flights for children under 12.

Further information on this topic can be found here.

Foreign nationals

For foreign nationals living in Germany, the regulations of their homeland and the entry regulations of the destination country apply.

Special entry and exit regulations

Special entry and exit regulations apply in certain countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Romania and Israel, for children travelling alone. Each passenger is responsible for ensuring they comply with these regulations. We therefore recommend that you find out the relevant requirements from the responsible authorities in good time to ensure you have all the correct documentation for the flight.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the conditions of the relevant airline apply. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

How do I book flights for children and infants?

Flights can be booked for infants and children under 12 years in the same way as for adults via the "Booking" area.

Click here to proceed to online booking.

Please note that children under 12 years must be accompanied on the plane by an adult on the same booking (same booking number). If this is not the case, please contact our call centre at least three days before departure.

Germanwings/Eurowings offers the following options for infant passengers (under two years):

  • Sitting in a booster seat in their own seat (this booking can be made via the call centre or at our airport counters, but not online or by mobile phone)
  • Secured with a loop belt on the lap of an adult.

You can find out more about travelling with infants here.

 Note:
For flights operated by our partner airlines, the terms of the relevant airline apply.
You can also book Germanwings/Eurowings flights for children and infants with one of our partner airlines or in a travel agency. For more information please contact the relevant airline or the travel agency. Our current partner airlines are Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

Can booster seats be used on board the plane?

Yes, children may travel in a booster seat, provided that you have booked an individual seat for the child (for infants under two years, this booking may only be made via the call centre or at one of our airport counters) and the booster seat has been checked by us at the counter for suitability.
The corresponding TÜV technical inspection seal ("for use in aircraft") is required here.

Here are some examples of seats with this seal:
