Reductions for younger passengers

For children between 2 and 11, as well as infants younger than 2 travelling in a child seat on their own separate seat we offer a reduction of 20% of the regular flight fare*.
Infants under 2 who travel on an adult’s lap pay a flat-rate fee per leg of 15 € / £13 (on domestic German flights 17,85 € incl. VAT).

Please remember: the age at the time of the last flight in the booking is the age applicable.

On-board child safety

For Germanwings passenger safety is of paramount importance. For this reason you are allowed to take your own child seat on board. Germanwings does not supply these child seats, you must bring your own. You can only book a child seat via the call centre or at a Germanwings airport desk.

Please note that if you want to use your own child seat on board, you must check in at the airport desk, so that we can check it meets our requirements. In such cases we cannot check you in online.

If the child seat does not meet the requirements, our flight crew are authorised to refuse its use and to stow the seat separately. In such cases, infants must be secured on the adult’s lap with a loop-belt. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the ticket for the infant’s own seat in this case.

We only allow child seats on board with the corresponding “for use in aircraft” TÜV seal.

Care service for children travelling alone

Children from 5 to 11 can also travel unaccompanied on Germanwings flights within Germany. Unfortunately at present we cannot offer this service on other routes.

Our staff are ever friendly and are there to look after the well-being of your child making sure they arrive safely at the destination airport. We also offer every child travelling unaccompanied a free soft drink.

Pushchairs, buggies and luggage

Per child/infant one pushchair, buggy, child seat or travel cot will be carried free of charge. Larger pushchairs will be carried as bulky luggage. Depending on the departure airport you will be allowed to take smaller, lighter buggies with you as far as the gate.

The same luggage allowance rules as adults apply for all children irrespective of their age or whether they have their own seat booked for them.

Travel documents and entry and exit regulations for children and adolescents

As well as the booking number all travellers need an identity card, even children/youths and infants.

New directives and European guidelines: from June 2012 children will be required to have their own travel documents.

From 26 June any German child travelling abroad, irrespective of its age, must be in possession of its own travel document. Entries in parents' passports will no longer be recognised.

The new rules also apply for travel within the EU and the Schengen area.

Foreign nationals resident in Germany are not directly affected by these changes to German passport legislation. Said foreign nationals have to abide by the rules of their home country and the entry requirements of the countries they may travel to.

Please note that for some countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Romania and Israel, special entry and exit provisions apply for children and young people travelling alone. We state unequivocally that it the responsibility of each passenger to ensure they comply with the national entry and exit provisions and we recommend they obtain information in good time before travelling from the appropriate national authorities and procure the necessary documents.

Germanwings can only carry children under 12 years of age if they are accompanied by a legally responsible adult.

On routes within Germany we do, however, offer a service for children travelling alone for children from 5 to 11 (unaccompanied minor service).

If the accompanying person is not the child's legal guardian, we require the written authorisation of the parents and/or the legal guardians. You can download the necessary form here. [Download form] Without written permission we will unfortunately have to refuse to carry the child.

Children under 12 years of age must be booked under the same reservation as the accompanying person (same booking number). If this is not the case, please contact our call centre up to 3 days before departure so that we can insert a note on the reservation of the accompanying person.
