Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and also the northernmost capital in Western Europe. It got its name from its Norwegian founder, Ingólfur Arnarson, one of the first settlers in Iceland, Reykjavik meaning “smoky bay” in Icelandic. The name supposedly refers to the steam from the hot springs in the area. This fascinating city boasts heated pavements, golf courses, numerous museums and theatres and attracts a great deal of tourists as well as people on weekend breaks.
Tip: Visit the Hallgrímskirkja (church of Hallgrímur), Reykjavik’s landmark. Built between 1945 and 1986, you get the best view over the city and sea from the top of the tower (73m).
