Rostock, the almost 800-year-old university and Hanseatic city is not only the largest town in the north German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania but is also situated at the centre of Germany’s Baltic Sea coastal bathing resorts. Rostock owes its significance to the Baltic Sea and it owes its name to the River Warnow. “Roztoc” is Slavic and refers when translated to the “flowing apart” of the wide river channel of the Warnow between the town’s port and Warnemünde. Sailing ships can to this day make use of an all-weather harbour located only a short sailing distance from the open sea. The lively, cosmopolitan city is characterised by a maritime flair with typical brick buildings in its historical centre.
