About Germanwings

What moves us

Thomas Winkelmann - Sprecher der Geschäftsführung

November 9th is a special day in European history. On this date in 1989 the Berlin Wall came tumbling down. This year, Germany and Europe are celebrating the 20th anniversary of that world-changing moment. The joyous scenes of East and West Germans embracing on that fateful November night sent out a clear message to the world: Freedom will always prevail.

Germanwings, too, is making its own contribution to overcoming borders. By offering great value flights, we have ensured that travel within Germany and other European nations is affordable for all Europeans. We have always tried to use our flight routes – particularly those to Central and Eastern Europe – to enable contacts and foster meaningful business relationships across Europe’s once divided borders. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, flights across the Iron Curtain were expensive, strenuous and only available to a select few. Citizens of the Eastern Bloc countries were not able to travel freely – crossing borders was beset with both considerable difficulty and tremendous sacrifice. In fact, freedom of travel was one of the principal demands of East German protesters during the peaceful revolution in the fall of 1989. After the collapse of the East German dictatorship, people were quick to take advantage of their newfound freedom of movement and soon set about exploring new countries
and cultures. Freedom of travel also equals freedom of trade. As Europe continues to expand, low-cost flights are key to stimulating and strengthening trade and the economy. And Germanwings offers just that possibility: great quality at low prices. We firmly believe that you appreciate all that and hope you will continue to fly with us in the future.

I wish you a pleasant flight.

Yours truly,
Thomas Winkelmann
